Abstract. It is well-known that orthogonal polynomials on the real line satisfy a three-term recurrence relation and conversely every system of polynomials satisfying a three-term recurrence relation is orthogonal with respect to some positive Borel measure on the real line. In this paper we extend this result and show that every system of polynomials satisfying some (2N + 1)-term recurrence relation can be expressed in terms of orthonormal matrix polynomials for which the coefficients are N × N matrices. We apply this result to polynomials orthogonal with respect to a discrete Sobolev inner product and other inner products in the linear space of polynomials. As an application we give a short proof of Krein’s characterization of orthogonal polynomials with a spectrum having a finite number of accumulation points.

On Orthogonal Matrix Polynomials
In this paper we deal with orthogonal matrix polynomials. First of all, we establish some basic notations and results we need later. A matrix polynomial P is a matrix whose entries are polynomials, or, equivalently, a combination P(t) = A 0 +A 1 t+ +A n t n , where A 0 ; ; A n are numerical matrices (the size of all the matrices which appear in this paper is N N). A positive deenite matrix of m...

We use Turán type inequalities to give new non-asymptotic bounds on the extreme zeros of orthogonal polynomials in terms of the coefficients of their three term recurrence. Most of our results deal with symmetric polynomials satisfying the three term recurrence pk+1 = xpk − ckpk−1, with a nondecreasing sequence {ck}. As a special case they include a non-asymptotic version of Máté, Nevai and Tot...

We rst give a brief survey of some aspects of orthogonal polynomials. The three-term recurrence relation gives a tridiagonal matrix and the corresponding Ja-cobi operator gives useful information about the orthogonalizing measure and the asymptotic behavior of the zeros of the orthogonal polynomials. The Toda lattice and other similar dynamical systems (Langmuir lattice or Kac-Van Moerbeke latt...

The problem considered here can be viewed as the analogue in higher dimensions of the one variable polynomial interpolation of Lagrange and Newton. Let x 1 ,. .. , x r be closed points in general position in projective space P n , then the linear subspace V of H 0 (P n , O(d)) (the space of homogeneous polynomials of degree d on P n) formed by those polynomials which are singular at each x i , ...
متن کاملSome Properties of Laurent Polynomial Matrices
In the context of multivariate signal processing, factorizations involving so-called para-unitary matrices are relevant as well demonstrated in the book of Vaidyanathan [11], or [4, 1] and more recently in a series of papers by McWhirter and co-authors [5, 6]. However, known factorizations of matrix polynomials, such as the Smith form [10], involve unimodular matrices but usual factorizations s...
